Strategic Partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Brings Significant Resources to Address Cancer in The Bahamas

Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Ltd, with MARSH, its international affiliate, in its role as the lead sponsor and organizer for Marathon Bahamas, is pleased to announce a strategic partnership between Marathon Bahamas and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader of the breast cancer movement and the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists – a partnership that could significantly impact the health of Bahamians, especially in the areas of breast cancer and other women’s health issues.

This alliance:
(i) Extends Marathon Bahamas from being a one day event to a full weekend programme.
(ii) Has awesome potential for the progress with breast cancer in The Bahamas.

In the first instance, it will add two additional events to the Marathon Bahamas 2011 weekend: a Komen for the Cure educational/training event for medical professionals and the public on breast cancer screening on Friday, January 14, 2011 and the Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure, a 5K walk/run on Paradise Island, on Saturday, January 15, 2011.

Marathon Bahamas 2011 will be held on Sunday, January 16, 2011.

In preparation for the Bahamas Race for the Cure, Ms. Neel Stallings, Susan G. Komen Global Race Ambassador will be in town on July 22-23, 2010, to provide training for committee members and volunteers for the Bahamas Race for the Cure.

Registration for Marathon Bahamas opened on July 9, 2011 with the first registrants coming from Israel. Uruguay, Finland, Canada and the United States of America.

Registrants for the Bahamas Race for the Cure and Marathon Bahamas 2011 will be able to donate additional funds to the named charities of these events, as well as encourage their families and friends to donate.

As part of the weekend events, Susan G. Komen for the Cure plans to bring a delegation of donors and participants to Nassau.

All funds raised through the Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure as part of the Marathon Bahamas 2011 weekend will benefit the fight against breast cancer programs in The Bahamas.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been working in The Bahamas since 2008 in partnership with the Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative, the Cancer Society of the Bahamas and the Sister Sister Support group, among others. In 2009, Komen for the Cure awarded Dr. Judith Hurley of the University Of Miami School Of Medicine, a two-year grant of nearly $300,000 to evaluate the genetic risk of Bahamian Women with breast and ovarian cancer.

“Adding the 2011 Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure to the Marathon Bahamas weekend is just another step in our ongoing commitment to help end breast cancer in the Bahamas and around the world,” said Katrina McGhee, Senior Vice President of Global Business Development & Partnerships for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “Our partnership approach is designed to address breast cancer and women’s health from every aspect: research, awareness, education, screening and treatment in partnership with the Bahamian organizations and officials working daily to help save lives.”

The Komen partnership extends far beyond the Bahamas Marathon weekend events. In addition to grants, which will be awarded after the Bahamas Race for the Cure, working with local female NGOs, Komen plans to implement Circle of Promise, Komen’s education and engagement platform that unites women globally in the effort to end breast cancer.

"The partnership that Marathon Bahamas has struck with Susan G Komen will be extremely beneficial on two main fronts. Firstly, the reach of the Komen organisation is enormous and their endorsement will have a major impact on participation in our weekend race events. Secondly, the philosophy of both entities is to support our charitable initiatives with in a consistent and long term manner. Truly this exemplifies Sunshine Insurance's mantra of "local knowledge and global reach" coming together for the good of the community", said Brian Moodie, President, Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Ltd.

Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sunshine Holdings Limited. Sunshine Holdings Limited was established in 1972 by a group of Bahamian businessmen whose youth energy and vision led to their being referred to as "The Sunshine Boys". Their mission was to prove that a group of Bahamian businessmen, of humble origin, could own and manage successful businesses. Their vision was to create a Bahamian "Blue Chip" Company. Over time their interests grew to include the Sunshine Group of Companies, Arawak Homes Limited - a company that has built more homes for more Bahamians than any other in the history of the Bahamas, Eleuthera Properties Limited, RoyalStar Assurance and Cotton Bay Limited. About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. n 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which is now the world’s largest breast cancer organization and the largest source of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer with nearly $1.5 billion invested to date.
